Difference Between an Air Conditioner and a Heat Pump

by Natasha Fatale in Home Improvement, Home Maintenance

One of our Arizona blog readers recently asked us to explain the difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump. Chas Roberts Air Conditioning steered us to the following explanation from This Old House:

How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump is an air conditioner in reverse. With an air conditioner, heat is extracted from the building as it is absorbed into refrigerant inside the fan unit in your basement or closet. The refrigerant then carries the heat to an outdoor unit where it is transferred outside. This leaves the air in the building cooler. This same basic cycle happens millions of times an hour in American refrigerators and freezers.

In a heat pump, heat is extracted from the air outside and brought into the house. Surprisingly, there is a decent amount of heat to be extracted until the outdoor air gets to approximately 30 to 35 degrees F. Then you need a backup heater.

A heat pump is an excellent solution for climates that don’t often get below freezing. In colder climates, a geo-exchange (geothermal) heat pump might be a better heat pump choice. A loop of pipe in the ground filled with antifreeze replaces the outdoor air conditioning unit and always sees the earth’s 52 degrees F. The initial cost is dramatically higher because of drilling or loop installation cost, but it works in cold weather.

Replacing Molding and Trim

by admin in Home Improvement

You don’t have to tear down walls or uproot your house just to give a room a new look. Thankfully, you can radically alter your decor simply by changing your molding and trim. Along with a splash of new paint and new window treatments, molding replacements are the easiest way to add definition and style to a room.

Basically, crown molding is the bridge between your walls and the ceiling and it’s an architectural accent that really makes a room shine. Typically, home improvement retailers sell a range of pre-milled molding that can be installed easily. If you plan to stain the wood, opt for pure wood crown molding. However, if you want to paint it, opt for wood composite, finger-jointed wood, or urethane as a way of lowering costs.

Urethane molding can also be installed using adhesive, making it cheaper and easier to put up than traditional wood milling. For custom milled molding, you’ll need to consult a woodworking shop, but this can be very expensive.

Remember, stock molding may not look like much on the shelf at the lumberyard, but once you get it painted and installed, it can add a lot of personality to a room.

How to Choose a Molding

When choosing a molding, always maintain a consistent scale from ceiling to floor. It can be tempting to put in an imposingly wide crown molding, but if you’re pairing it with a tiny base room, the balance of the room won’t work.

For a more traditional or formal look, choose molding that’s ornate or intricately milled. Simple designs are typically more modern or contemporary.

How to Install Molding

First, never assume that two walls or two surfaces are going to meet at a 90-degree angle. Always measure and adjust your cutting accordingly to avoid unpleasant gaps.

Second, invest in the proper tools. With the right equipment, your installation will be easier and look better. Remember, crown molding installation requires precise cuts. So, before you even start, practice in a few extra pieces before you make your final cuts.

If you can, invest in specialty corner pieces or plinth blocks that will make your corners a lot easier. They’re easier to install and you’ll find they stand up better to seasonal changes.

Finally, always pre-finish the molding before you install it. Paint or stain it a few days before you plan to use it, and then give it lots of time to dry before you put it up.

Choosing the Best Variety of Sago Palm Trees

by admin in Gardening

image One of the most prehistoric living plants today is Cycas Revoluta, commonly known as The Sago Palm plant. These plants play an important role in beautifying, both the interior and exterior, of a house. These Sago Palm plants are tagged as the most unusually decorative plants that require absolute care & maintenance. They belong to the family of Conifers.

The Sago palms are considered to be the most simplistic and ‘homely’, as they are characterized as the most appropriate plants to grow at home, whether indoors or outdoors, for which neither do you need any professional help nor gardening expertise. They survive for a tremendously lengthy period of time, and are tolerant of many unusual temperatures, levels of sunlight, and types of care.

There are quite a few things to keep in mind with Sago Palm care. Take extra care of the plant as its new leaves emerge and make sure the plant doesn’t suffer from dryness during this time. Though usually the Sago Palms are fairly tolerant, temperatures too high or too low can spoil the plant. The growth rate for a Sago Palm is very slow. Most only enlarge in size one inch per year.

Yet another major factor of Sago Palm care is its reproduction. Sago Plants are simultaneously dioecious in nature meaning that there are both male and female plants. The best way to grow these plants is via hand pollination during the month of May as it is considered the best season because the female seed is ready for its union by the initial two months of each calendar year. After its removal, the seed has to be soaked in water for a number of days. Make sure the outer most red casing is removed. Once it is properly soaked, then during spring, you can plant the seed but the trick is to do it sideways in the soil with only the top edge exposed. Normally, the seedling begins to etch out in three months but the plant will take years to fully develop.

Yet another way through which the Sago Palms can be propagated without hand pollination is by off-setting a healthy Sago Palm with a small shovel. Then it should be left to dry for a minimum period of seven days before being planted and watered.

Sago Palms make exquisite plants. It is vital to keep in mind that proper Sago Palm care, though a little complicated, is necessary to the existence of the plant. A spectacular plant can only be achieved through appropriate care and nourishment.

Decorating with a Nautical Theme

by A ORourke in Decorating

nautical clockI recently visited a friend of mine in Florida. She has a beautiful 4 bedroom home right off the water where she can enjoy the sound of the ocean day in and day out.

Her home is lovely, with each room decorated in its own unique style. One room in particular that I really liked, but would never think of decorating myself, is the room that the family uses as their office. It sits on the back side of the house facing the beach and the ocean beyond. The window is propped open most of the time so you can hear the sound of the waves crashing, the seagulls in the air, and smell the salty ocean breeze.

The décor of the room is a boating and nautical theme. It was tastefully done and she had beautiful items that looked very expensive. One of the items that really caught my attention was an old mahogany nautical clock. She had other accents that really added a nice touch to the room, like a nautical lamp that was sitting on the mahogany computer desk; a really neat touch was the guest book for those who visited her home. Typically these are used to log boating visitors, but she had thought of a clever way to incorporate it into her office and it was a unique way to keep the memory of her guests.

My trip to her house really got me thinking about using a nautical them in a bathroom or another room in my house. I started looking at products online and came across a few sites that have boating items and nautical gifts and accessories that I really liked. I’m going to start by looking for the perfect shade of blue paint for the walls and then start ordering items for the décor.

I am also going to thank her for not only opening up her home to me during my visit, but also for inspiring me to decorate my guest bathroom with a lovely piece of nautical jewelry I discovered online. It’s a perfect way to say thanks!

Keep the Gift of Flowers from Dying

by admin in Flowers

image Someone has taken the time to buy you a beautiful bouquet of flowers, but the minute you get them home, they die on you. How can you make these lovely flowers last longer?

Flowers can be difficult to keep alive, especially after their stems have been cut, so what can you do to at least get some joy out of their sight for a few weeks at least?

Ice water

One popular belief is that if you take flowers and put them in ice water, they will last longer than if you put them in luke-warm water. Don’t make it too cold, though, you could damage the stem. Mix the ice with some warm water to achieve the correct temperature.

Refrigeration

Many times, florists will keep flowers in a refrigerator because the cool air helps them to last longer. You can do the same during periods of time when nobody is home, or nobody is there to look at the flowers.

Sunlight

The flowers, of course, need sunlight, so make sure you put them in a window that will give them a lot of sunlight. Many types of flowers need direct sunlight and this is hard to find inside the house, so usually the more sun you can give them, the better. If they are in a corner, with no sunlight, then they will die very quickly. Alternately, you can move them outside to a sunny spot during the day, and then move them back inside again after a few hours.

Plant food

You can buy plant food now that will act as soil for flowers, and it provides more than enough nutrients to keep flowers alive for weeks on end. Products like Miracle Grow are plentiful and not too expensive. If you want flowers to be around for awhile, then this is a plus. Some flower arrangements will come with small packets of flower food attached. Read the directions and add this to water when you transfer them into a vase.

Sugar

If you don’t want to buy plant food, then you can take a teaspoon of sugar and put it in the flower’s water. Florists will often do this to keep flowers alive longer.

Trim the ends

As soon as you get home, trim the ends of the flowers by a quarter to half an inch while they are underwater. Immediately after this, put them in a vase of cool water to which you have added sugar. Often, this will keep flowers alive even longer.

If someone is going to take the time to find you flowers to say Thank You or I Love You, then you should take the time to make sure the flowers live as long as possible. Follow the above suggestions, and see what works for you. Through trial and error you will find the right solution for the flowers that you have.

Save Money on Kid’s Clothing

by admin in Kids

The best and easiest ways to save

Recently my husband brought something to my attention and that is I spend more on my kids’ clothes than I do on mine and his. I love the way they look in a brand new outfit. The problem is keeping my kids in nice clothing can expensive especially when they are constantly outgrowing them. It is for this reason that when it comes to buying clothes for them to play in, parents must shop for bargains and stock up.

Luckily for me and for my checking account, there are a number of different way to save money of kid’s clothing. Getting them to stop growing so fast seems like the most obvious answer but also isn’t too realistic. Instead, use a few of these easy steps to get your kids looking great and keeping money in your pocket:

  • The first place to stop is at a few of your local consignment stores. They are always good for a bargain or two. Try to go at the end of the season. This is when you’ll find the best clothes on sale. If your kid ever needs a really nice dress or suit for a formal occasion, I would try a consignment shop first. You run the chance of finding some real gems at a fantastic price. Since kids out grow clothes so fast, the bargains you’ll find in a consignment shop look like they are brand new.
  • Next time you’re driving and see a yard sale, make sure you stop in. People are looking to get rid of things they consider junk or have no room for. You can find some really amazing children’s items for amazing prices. A friend of mine recently found baby furniture, riding toys, and decorator bedroom for her soon to arrive little girl for only pennies of what she would have normally paid. A yard sale is also a great opportunity to find shirts and pants that have lots of wear left in them for less than a dollar.
  • A great time to find some good buys on children’s clothing is during end of season sales. Most of the clothes of sale end up being pieces that can be worn almost year round. Shop for bargains on tee shirts, pants, sneakers and other kids accessories. If you think your kid will be able to fit in a certain size come next winter season, an end of winter sale is a great time to purchase a normally pricey winter coat.
  • Don’t forget about friends and family members looking to unload their kid’s old clothes. This works vice versa, as well. If they have any good clothing that their kids can’t use anymore, ask them if they would consider letting you have them. The best part about this suggestion is that it won’t cost you anything either!
  • You’ll final option is thrift stores. They tend to be cheaper than consignment shops but cost more than the usual yard sale. While finding a really nice piece of children’s clothing can be more difficult at a thrift store, it can pay off with a super bargain when you do come across one.

My Roomba Named Robbie

by Natasha Fatale in Cleaning

Roomba vacuumI absolutely love my iRobot Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner, so much so I gave it a name. I got it at Buy.com for the amazing price of $120.69 and that even included free shipping!

Before I bought it, I did a lot of research, and read every review on Amazon.com. I really wanted one, and was thinking about buying a refurbished unit from Amazon. Then Buy.com came along with their screaming deal, and I just could not pass it up! It’s refurbished, factory serviced, with a 90 warranty, and includes the scheduler, docking station battery charger, wall mount, and remote control.

It showed up on my door step in a matter of days. It was easy to figure out and set up, and the first time Robbie went to work my dog and I sat on the couch and watched in fascination (for my dog it was more like fascinated horror). That little guy had such a personality I found my self talking to him it. It busily worked all over the carpet, moving around in odd patterns, bouncing gently off of furniture, and then went to the docking station and docked itself, where it gave a happy little series of beeps to announce it was finished. The second time I used him it my dog followed wagging his tail, so he apparently detected the personality feature also.

The carpet looked great, the dog hair was gone, and all I had to do was empty the container, which is no big deal. Robbie can clean the carpet while I’m at work - I just schedule the time I want him to start. It’s a great time saver for me and my house is that much cleaner.

Summer Air Conditioning

by Natasha Fatale in Consumer Info, Home Improvement

Air conditioning - it’s easy for many of us to take it for granted, but on a sizzling, sticky summer afternoon, something you long for if you don’t.

The phrase air conditioning usually refers to the cooling and dehumidification of interior air for comfort. While removing warmth via machines to supply air conditioning is a somewhat recent innovation, the cooling of buildings is not. The theory of air conditioning was used in Ancient Rome, where water from the aqueducts was dispersed through the walls of homes to cool them.

Contemporary air conditioning evolved during the 19th century during great advancements in chemistry, and the first significant electrical air conditioning was created 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. Early business air conditioners were developed to cool down the air for manufacturing instead of private comfort.

Air conditioning often has a positive effects on victims of asthma and summer allergies. If you live in a temperate region or an area that has very hot summers, like Phoenix, your a/c system may be much more essential to you than your heating system.

Figuring out the accurate size of your home’s air conditioner is significant. The size of your central air conditioning unit can be a cause for varying air temperatures experienced in your residence. HVAC ductwork sizing is important for correct heating and cooling in each area of your home. If you have a home with air conditioning troubles, there may be several things that are causing the problem. If your air conditioner is always running, but your home still doesn’t cool down there is a problem. To keep your a/c unit working properly, and avoid air conditioner repairs, keep your filters clean, and have air conditioner maintenance performed twice a year.

Baby Showers

by Natasha Fatale in Entertaining

Baby showers are quite enjoyable for an expectant mom, her friends and family. It’s a chance for them to rejoice in he new baby and to “shower” the new mom with affection and presents. Every society has traditions celebrating pregnancy.

At one time presents were given to the new mother after the birth of the baby. It was frequently an afternoon tea party with close woman relatives of the mother-to-be. The gifts given to her would normally be handcrafted and nearly always very sensible. Usually showers would only be held for the first baby, the one that makes her a mother. There would typically be just a single celebration given for that newborn.

Modern Baby Showers

These days, baby showers are not only given for successive kids joining the family unit, but the mother-to-be is often “showered” several times, by different groups: workplace, church, family, etc. They frequently include men as well as women that the expectant couple know. Sometimes they are exceptionally stylish and chic; other times they are a great deal more informal.

Showers today as a rule only last a couple of hours and are usually held at a restaurant or someone’s residence. The shower is often held prior to the birth by one or two months, which is, as a rule, early enough even if the little one chooses to arrive a bit prematurely. This additional time gives the expectant mother a chance to exchange duplicate presents and purchase whatever else she requires but didn’t receive at the shower.

There is usually food at the shower, either just refreshments or sometimes full meals. There is almost always a cake - which is often the showpiece of the table; it can be an uncomplicated sheet cake, or a unique and sophisticated confection. There are many ideas to be had for imaginative cakes that compliment the theme of the shower. It’s a good idea to decide on a theme and plan for the cake simultaneously, before announcing the particulars of the shower to the expectant mother and invitees. This way, the hostess is assured the cake works with the theme and isn’t under pressure at the very last minute to find an appropriate cake.

Putting together a baby shower need not be costly, as resources can dictate the location and how the celebration will be held. A more costly affair doesn’t mean that the mother-to-be is more cherished, or that it will be more enjoyable. A shower can be a great deal of fun without being pricey if you think of a good theme.

While some people make fun of games and call them “silly,” they can be perfect for breaking the ice at a get together where people may not be acquainted with each other and can also facilitate an assortment of ages communicate more to each other. What’s more, when else is playing childish games with other people suitable? Enjoy the preparation and the fun during the shower, and keep in mind that the memories are what is most important.
